Until Monday, any details gleaned about La Loche had come from the community itself, including its town Facebook page indicating Sunday that the community had added to its 24 cases in the village and the Clearwater Dene First Nation.

It was also from the community that we learned village elder, 83-year-old Joseph Pierre Sylvester, died in a North Battleford hospital of COVID-19 — the province’s fifth death, but something the government  did not to mention in its daily news release Sunday.

“I’m worried that if we don’t get a handle on this, we might see more deaths, and that’s my biggest fear,” said La Loche Mayor Robert St. Pierre.
